What is a birthday without birthday cakes! Now a days we donít just whip one up on our own, we go to the bakery and order a specialty cake with all the bells and whistles! What a way to send out birthday wishes!
We choose between chocolate, white or marble cake. Maybe even pound cake! We choose the icing and what we want it to look like. Cartoon characters, flowers, cars, insects, just about anything goes. We choose what to write on it, whether we want happy birthday, happy 21st birthday, happy b-day! Maybe you donít even want Happy Birthday, maybe we just want to try and fit 50 candles on a cake for someone celebrating their 50th birthday! Not really recommended, that would be like trying to start a forest fire!
Maybe a theme is a good place to start. If you already have a theme for your party then maybe you can create a cake to that theme. If you donít have a theme, youíve come to the right place! Hopefully we can help you find the perfect theme for your party and your cake.
The most obvious themes are those exciting years: 1st; 13 Ė now a teenager; sweet 16; 18 Ė finally an adult; 21 Ė gambling and drinking age (for some places); the big 30,40,50,60,70,75,80,85,90,95,100 and anything over 100, well thatís really something to celebrate!
For kids, themes can be easy. Usually their favourite cartoon characters but you may find that they have a favourite interest that could be used as a birthday party theme. A little boy who loves cars or insects. A little girl who love sunflowers or teddy bears.
Depending on the amount of people coming to the party you may find it easier to have one smaller cake decorated with your theme and them have cupcakes to hand out to the guests. They too could be decorated to coordinate with the themed cake but obviously in a smaller version using colours or flowers.
So whether you decide to make the cake from scratch on your own or do like so many others are now doing and order one from your local bakery, deciding on the theme is a key factor when deciding what you want your cake to represent. Of course, whatever theme you decide, make sure you leave room for the candles, because what is a birthday cake without candles to blow out. For those larger numbered birthdays, I would suggest purchasing candles that look like a number. For example buy and #5 candle and a #0 candle for a 50th birthday vs trying to put 50 individual candles on a single cake. That can be difficult and quite dangerous!!! Happy celebrating!
